Artist Statement: Cosplay, short for “costume play,” is an activity in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction.  Favorite cosplay sources include manga, anime, comic books, video games, and fantasy films.   In this series of photographs taken in 2013 at Connecticon, an anime festival held in Harford, Connecticut, photographer Jim Gipe explores the world of cosplay using an iPhone, capturing the ways fans express themselves via costumes and self-presentation.  The black and white images on display are printed 30×30 inches on canvas, using state-of-the-art inkjet technology.  Their offbeat beauty conveys both the whimsy and the earnestness of cosplay.
